Happy YOU year!

⏲ Read Time: 7-10 minutes

December is for paying it forward, so let’s make January about giving it back to ourselves.

You can’t expect to have a good year if you don’t take care of yourself, so take the time to create some beauty habits that can be used throughout the year. Sephora Play has hooked us up with some products that will help us with replenishing some hydration into our skins after the whirlwind holiday season.

Start your day bright eyed and bushy tailed with an eye cream and end your night with some hygge appreciation with a clay mask and let your locks drink up some moisture with a deep conditioning treatment.

I truly love how this month’s stylebook offers some monthly challenges to make 2018 not only our best year, but our most beautiful year. For January, it’s time to drink up, so use this calculation (your weight/2) to figure how many ounces of water you should drink a day.

Here’s what’s inside my Sephora Play this month:

LANCOME | Cils Booster XL Super-Enhancing Mascara Base

Growing up, I never appreciated how fortunate I was that I had long natural lashes. The older I get, the more I realize that I’ve never had any insecurities and that length has never been an issue, however, thickness has been my downfall.

Lash health is something I low-key don’t think about because of the aforementioned. However, it’s always good to #TreatYoSelf and this conditioning primer gives me a little extra oomph. It’s infused with Vitamin E and microfibers, which helps deliver some extra length and volume.

In the photo, the left eye has the CILS BOOSTER XL primer on it, coated with Too Face’s Better Than Sex mascara, while the right eye just has the mascara. You can notice that there’s more length on the eye with the primer and it doesn’t look like spider-legs.

While doing some research, I saw that this primer can be used as a ‘lash mask’ and be used before bed to help clean lashes and deliver some nourishment, which would probably be my intended use.

If I’m being honest, priming my lashes probably won’t become a staple in my daily makeup routine, but this is a great substitution for those days I don’t feel like fussing with falsies.

GLAMGLOW | SUPERCLEANSE Clearing Cream-to-Foam Cleanser

We’re the three charcoals that’s gonna clear your skin.

A long time ago when I was religious about getting facials from my esthetician, she told me that using clay cleansers would be the best remedy for my problematic skin. Since then, her words have echoed through my mind whenever I’m on the market.

When I saw that everyone would be receiving this in their Play Boxes, I was hyped because her words were now coming true. Already a lover of GLAMGLOW masks, I was hoping to add another obsession, especially because this has its signature TEAOXI eucalyptus leaf, which really makes a world of difference on my skin.

To put this bad boy to the test, you apply it to your hands and apply water, rub hands vigorously together to create a lather before applying to the face, which I thought was interesting. When they say vigorous, they’re not joking but the more you rub, the better the lather.

After a one-time test, I noticed that my pore seemed smaller, which is usually the case after a GLAMGLOW mask with TEAOXI in it. This is something I’ll have to continue to use and see if it’s worth investing in, but I definitely feel optimistic.

Be warned that this has a very strong licorice scent, which might be troublesome if you don’t like licorice.

SMASHBOX | Photo Finish Primerizer

Even though I’m someone who’s been a morning person for the past five years (not by choice), there are definitely some days that I would rather take a few extra zzz’s than do my morning routine.

This is a primer and moisturizer all in one (hence the namesake) that’s suppose to simplify your routine while delivering some deep hydration with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. These two stellar products will help blur any fine lines and help avoid settling makeup into pores. I love the fact it’s super lightweight and melts right into the skin.

I’ve tested a few Smashbox primers in the past and even though they’re a cult-favorite, I was never really sold on them. I’m impressed with this one because it’s not greasy, it’s so quick setting and it left my skin silky smooth. As for makeup application, my makeup settled nicely and made for a clean surface to blend and create.

My only gripe about the sample itself is that it’s hard to retrieve the product out of its package, but with the full size, it does come with a pump.

CLINIQUE | Pep-Start Eye Cream

Start the day with a little bit of pep, even if you didn’t get enough ZZZ’s.

This brightening eye cream is perfect to throw in your bag for pick-me-ups throughout the day. I was amazed how my eyes appeared brighter, refreshed and less puffy in as little as a minute. Normally, I don’t opt for eye creams because I’m someone who prides themselves in getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night, but sometimes we all can use a pick me up.

I really loved the applicator because I could apply the cream directly to the under eye area and use its rounded surface to cover it all. I did notice a slight sensation after applying, but it was not an uncomfortable feeling.

OLEHENRIKSEN | Hygge HydraClay Detox Mask

Slather on this face mask and pull out your copy of The Little Book of Hygge because you could use a little dose of cozy. That is what hygge is after all!

This clay mask is one of its kind because unlike most, this one doesn’t tighten your skin. It’s packed with five botanical oils that nourishes your skin while drawing out impurities. This formula is so gentle, making it perfect for sensitive skin.

Perfect for anyone with sensitive skin but myself. While the mask was drying, I started to feel a slight numbing sensation along the side of my nose, which is a hotbed for blackheads. Not thinking anything of it and thinking that it was doing its intended job of drawing out impurities, I followed the instructions and used a warm wash cloth to rinse away the mask after the recommended 10 minutes.

After drying my face, I noticed that the areas that were covered with my face became very red and irritated, as you can sort of see in the photo. At no point did I ever noticed a burning or irritating sensation, aside from the slight numbness beside my nose, so it was hard to tell if I had an allergic reaction or if it was suppose to be this way because the irritation did go down after half an hour or so.

I’m someone who doesn’t suffer from sensitive skin and my skin takes a beating, between facials, microderms and masks. I have never suffered from a reaction like this, which is alarming because this is intended to be great for those with skin problems.

BRIOGEO | Don’t Despair, Repair! Mask

When you change your hair color as much as I do, you’ll learn that your locks need as much love and hydration as they can get.

One of my beauty resolutions has been to take better care of my hair, whether it being me putting down the dry shampoo and washing it more often, or using hot tools less. My hair has always been one of those things I’ve struggled to get a grip on, and I want to change that this year.

This has rosehip oil, argan oil, collagen and silk to reassure us that it’s going to be okay and that our hair is in good hands. I loved how it melted into my hair and that it felt incredibly silky in the shower. It rinsed out like a dream and my ends looked and felt visibly softer post-drying.

After testing the Scalp Revival shampoo, I found that the two products can be used to pack a lot of love to your hair, based on the Briogeo Instagram page. For those days that my hair needs some R&R, I’ll definitely be grabbing this two-fer combo.
