Follow your heart

⏲ Read time: 7-10 minutes

Like most beauty subscriptions, Birchbox decided to take the approach to follow your heart and do the things that make you happiest. Etching time out for self-love has been the mantra for 2018 and this month is no different as Birchbox packs some products that are not only going to make your routine more seamless, but also products that are genuinely good for you.

Treat yourself with a shampoo and conditioner that’s good for the planet, a scent that will seduce and tempt your desires and to keep your heart content, enjoy a few bonus products.

Here’s what’s inside my Birchbox this month:

CLEAN Reserve | Amber Saffron perfume

I think I might have found a floral scent that I don’t hate! (It might help that it’s loaded with mandarin and raspberry, but that’s besides the point.) With its namesake, I got a little hesitant before spritzing because amber is a scent that gives me a headache the longer I wear it.

This perfume is refreshingly light with those notes of raspberry and mandarin oil, but the musk, saffron and amber gives it a well balanced smell that lasts all day. I love how they all marry into an intoxicating scent of seduction and desire. The amber is truthfully the last thing I notice with this perfume, as those top citrusy notes tantalize the nose.

I tested the Sueded Ode in my July Sephora Play, and I was not a big fan, but I’m always down to try other products from companies that are conscious of their products, giving you only the best. I really like CLEAN Reserve’s M.O., which is to deliver raw fragrances that provide sustainability and durability.

When I’m on the market for finding a new fragrance, this might be a pick-up, especially with the bouquets of spring right around the corner.

Love, Beauty, and Planet | Argan Oil & Lavendar shampoo and conditioner

To think, there was a time that I would bitch and moan about receiving haircare samples! Especially ones that are not only good for your hair, but also great for the environment.

This shampoo and conditioner combo is color-safe, paraben- and silicone-free. But not only that, it’s also great for combatting frizz and smooths strands, while also being organic. The biggest thing I love about these products is their price point: A 13.5-ounce bottle only costs $9! Talk about a bargain.

Lavender is another scent that I don’t normally gravitate towards, simply because I associate it with stress-reducing aromatherapy. On the nose, you smell the French lavender, but as you work it into a lather or layer it on your strands, the notes of argan oil take over and flood the shower with its cozy scent.

After using both together, my hair felt softer and easier to manage. I was truly pleased with this system and would strongly consider purchasing once I’m done with my current OGX. While doing some research, I also saw they had a Coconut Water and Mimosa Flower duo for volume and shine, which has definitely peaked my interest.

Marcelle | Ultimate Volume Nano Mascara

“Small, yet mighty.” – This mascara.

Heed its warning when it says it’s little. The first time I opened this mascara, I was dumbfounded with how little its applicator was. I immediately thought that there was simple no way this was going to do anything for my lashes.

But don’t be fooled, because this little guy can reach those stubborn lashes to give it some major volume. It got right into the nook and cranny of those upper lashes and it gave just enough length on the bottoms without looking ridiculous like spider legs.

My only downside is that this mascara does take a while to dry, so don’t grab this when you’re in a pinch for time. However, I promise it’s worth the dry time because it doesn’t budge until you’re ready to take the day off and wash your face.

R + Co. | PARK AVE Blow Out Balm

If it weren’t so damn expensive, I’d pay to have my hair blown out every single day. Along with cleaning my makeup brushes, blow-drying my hair is my least favorite beauty chore and I’m constantly searching for products to help alleviate the time it takes. When you got a thick ass mane like mine, it can take anywhere from 20-30 minutes just to get it all dry!

After already falling in love with the R + Co. dry shampoo, I was excited to get my hands on this blow out balm. It’s been a minute since I’ve searched for a product that is a bonafide heat protectant, so I was excited to see this item’s main objective is protection.

Plus, it has a sweet scent of oranges, guava and amber, so who doesn’t love delicious smelling haircare?!

Applying this and blow-drying my hair, I noticed that my hair was left sticky in certain sections, as if I didn’t work the product through the hair enough. Despite applying, combing it through the hair with a wide-tooth comb for several minutes, it was a little discouraging to feel it sticky.

I also didn’t notice a major difference in terms of time reduction when it came to blow-drying. This might be a product that gets thrown into my blow-dry cocktail (which includes Moroccan Oil, Marc Anthony Grow Long serum and the Aveda Daily Repair serum), but on its own, I was pretty disappointed.

✨ BONUS PRODUCTS ✨

Estee Lauder | Pure Color Envy Lipstick in Envious

If I’m going to be honest on this site, I think it’s important that you know that I hate lipstick samples like this. I’m someone who doesn’t love lip brushes (in fact, I don’t even think I have one in my arsenal!), therefore, I cringed when I saw this.

I love that Birchbox gave us some bonus products this month, however, I truly could have done without this. Strike one because I don’t love most lipstick formulas and strike two because Envious is a red shade (that I already own a gagillion of).

Strike three because of your sample component and your’e out of there. Honestly, I didn’t even bother to test this out because I simply knew I wasn’t going to like it. Samples of this kind either have very little product or there’s so much that’s going to dry out if you don’t use it right away. Safe bet was to just trash it and stick with my signature reds I know and love.

FOREO | Day & Night Cleansers

Now these are samples I can get behind because there’s fewer things I love more that complete skincare routines that map out exactly what you need, morning and night. FOREO isn’t a brand that I have heard of, but after doing some research, I noticed that it’s similar to the lines of Clarisonic, which I think we’re all familiar with.

However, it’s certainly not a cheaper alternative, but if it works, then why not ball out on it? Plus there’s an adorable travel-sized cleanser that’s only $40, which I might consider splurging on because I loved the cleansers and who doesn’t love gadgets that amplify your natural beauty?!

It does claim that these cleansers are meant to be used with the LUNA cleanser, but it can be used on their own. Just be ready to put in some elbow grease because these are NOT easy to lather.

The day cleanser is true to its claim of making the skin more radiant and brighter. Its fruity scent gives you a wakeup call and it left my skin feeling refreshed. No need for a moisturizer here.

The night cleanser is smells incredible (thanks to almond extract) and it nourishes the skin nicely. I liked how it had exfoliants in it but it wasn’t too harsh because it melts from a gel to a milky substance that leaves the skin super soft.
