🍎 Beauty Schooled ✏️

⏲ Read time: 5-7 minutes

It’s time to get beauty schooled.

This month’s Sephora Play is all about going back to basics and teaching us the fundamentals of beauty! There’s plenty of high-mark products in here to learn with and elevate our first day of school looks.

It’s been one full calendar year since discovering the best SP Box of all time and I can only hope that there’s some gems in this month’s! (And no, I still haven’t been able to shut up about Bum Bum Cream…)

Here’s what was inside my Sephora Play this month:

Anastasia Beverly Hills | Brow Gel

Remember back in the day when everyone was OBSESSED with the Anastasia Beverly Hills brow pomade? I remember it was one of the very first ‘big girl’ makeup products I bought for myself after doing so much research on it. In fact, I still have it… even though I’m no longer an “Ash Brown” shade!

More often than not, I opt for just a clear brow gel in lieu of a tinted brow gel. Since going blonde, I seldom fill in my brow (partly because I let them grow in like CRAZY before I get them waxed) and rarely take the time to get my brows on fleek.

I’ve been a long time user/lover of Benefits’ Ready, Set, Brow! and have been feeling that it’s time to spice things up. Thankfully, SP coming through with a clutch sample. It’s hard to judge how well a brow gel works, but I did notice that there wasn’t gunky or heavy residue on my brows and they didn’t clump together.

However, I wasn’t a big fan of this for two reasons: 1) the wand is not ideal for getting the baby hairs. I felt that it was almost too big and unmanageable and I was turned off by it. 2) The smell. It has an alcohol-based scent that I don’t love around my eyes.

I don’t think this will be replacing my Ready, Set, Brow! obsession just yet, but it isn’t an awful gel to switch out for.

MAKE UP FOR EVER | Artist Rouge Lipstick in C211

Yes, I might have tested out an Artist Rouge lippie from MUFE before, but I can’t really count it as a fair testing because it was a faulty sample. It wouldn’t be fair to write it off as a dud, so I was excited to try it out for realsies.

The Artist Rouge lipsticks are insanely pigmented and super opaque, so one swipe and you’re out the door. It has a creamy formula that hydrates and doesn’t dry out lips with extended use. The more you apply, the more likely you will smear, so be sure to blot your lips before heading out the door. These lipsticks also didn’t pass an eat/drink/kiss test, but don’t let that stop you from trying them out yourself because they are insanely hydrating.

C211 is a gorgeous rosewood shade that actually appeared darker than what I anticipated, making it a great transition from summer to fall. It’s like almost every other shade in my arsenal, so it didn’t wow me or replace any favorites. Since we know how I feel about actual lipsticks, this wasn’t anything to brag home about in my opinion.

Living Proof | T.B.D. Multi-Tasking Styler

I’m certainly not mad about a versatile styling cream that can be used on wet or dry hair and have a magnitude of claims for it. It gives you curl definition, texture, frizz control and aids in your next blowout. Plus, it smells amazing!

This made a faves video and I’m so happy that I’m able to fall back in love with this product. Since I still have a ton left of the original sample I received, I’m thinking of packing this away for our upcoming journeys.

Benefit Cosmetics | Hoola Matte Bronzer

This is a cult-favorite bronzer and now I’m able to fully understand why. I’ve never been able to get my hands on this coveted bronzer  and conveniently, all of the bronzers I use have hit pan and I just haven’t been tempted to find another one to replace them until now.

This is a shimmer-free, matte-finishing bronzer that will help enhance your sun-kissed skin, or fake it until you can make it to the beach for one last summer hurrah. It blends like a dream and it’s such a natural hue that it doesn’t make you look orange or like you rolled in dirt.

While doing my research for this product, I learned a trick or two about creating a sun-kissed appearance, which might be more up my alley compared to the stereotypical heavy contour.

  • Use a fluffier brush so this way it doesn’t pick up as much color and you can gradually build your glow.
  • Start at the temple and then focus on the high points of your face. Compared to contouring, which hollows out the cheekbones, this will
  • Always work the brush down!

Origins | Original Skin Retexturizing Mask with Rose Clay

Though, I’m not even mad about this one either 💁🏼. Like the T.B.D. Multi-tasking styler, this is another product that has been a favorite for a while. I received it complimentary in an Influenster VoxBox and it has been one of the best clay masks I’ve ever used, so I was excited to get my hands on it again.

It combines Mediterranean rose clay (draws out impurities), Canadian willow herb (restores radiance) and jojoba beads (exfoliant) to help exfoliate and reduce the appearance of pores. It made my face look brighter and more radiant after a one-time use. I will admit that there was a stinging sensation and it does tighten on the skin, but that just means the clay is doing its job!

I’m now fully convinced to buy the full size when I run out, because who doesn’t love a pretty pink face mask that actually does its intended job?!

OUAI | VOLUME Shampoo & Conditioner

All aboard the OUAI train 🚂

Last month, we fell (back) in love with OUAI Wave Spray and I’ve been full steem ahead on trying more products from this lineup. I’ve been in the market for finding a new in-between shampoo and conditioner for everyday use because I’ve grown bored of my drugstore pick-ups.

When I hear volume, I get hella nervous because my hair is already thicker beyond belief. Volume makes my hair too big and unmanageable and I tend to avoid it like the plague. However, I saw that this is suppose to replenish moisture and condition and with my brittle locks, I need as much help as I can get.

Immediately, I noticed a little lift in my crown and the front of my head while it was air-drying. I also noticed that my hair felt softer and shinier after a one-time use. Even though the sample was only enough for the one-time, I’d be anxious to see how it would work with continued use.

I’m not sure if this is the miracle product to fix my hair woes, but I definitely didn’t hate it and at least I can add another product to my list of approved products from this company.
