GBNY experience & swag bag haul

⏲ Read time: 7-10 minutes

For years, I’ve always wanted to go to GenBeauty, but as a former sports writer working the peak of high school season, it was never possible. This year, I booked my tickets the second they went on sale and started counting down the days.

Nearly a month later, I received an email from the Ipsy Open Studio with complimentary tickets in my inbox. When I first started my blog, a friend of mine had told me about Open Studio and suggested that I signed up as a newbie content creator. I never heard anything about my application (and still haven’t at the time this post has been written), so I was shocked to see comp’d tickets because I was a ‘Creator’, which included a Creator Day ticket as well as general admission ticket.

Months went by before any mention of what this Creator Day was, and I couldn’t find any information on the GB website on what to expect. Even asking people who had attended GB in the past weren’t helpful with suggestions. Information about the events were made public until the week leading up to the festivities, which is really inconvenient for those who had made planes/accommodations months in advance.

I voluntarily skipped the first day of GenBeauty to go to the New York Rangers/Edmonton Oilers game (even though they lost 2-1). Since GB is a two-day event, I figured we wouldn’t miss much, and honestly, I don’t think we did. Walking into the Javits Center, my friend and I walked in, did a quick lap around, grabbed our swag bags and headed out. Seeing the long lines and overwhelming volume of brand booths, we quickly realized that we might have been in over our heads.

Even though my time at GB might have been extremely short-lived, it’s not to say that my experience was awful. In fact, I think that it was absolutely worth the 15 minutes we spent inside! I’ve always heard that the swag bags are well worth the money of the admission ticket, especially for a two-day event. Brands also have a lot of incentive to buy at the convention with discounted prices and freebies, so the long lines are definitely worth waiting in, if you really want something.

All of these prices are estimates based on Google searches and/or past experiences with the brands. Since a majority of these products are deluxe-sized samples, some of the prices listed are for either travel-sized or full-sized, which will be noted.
