birchbox unboxing: december ’18

What’s meant to be will find a way ✨

⏲ Read time: 5-7 minutes

As the year comes to an end, it’s a great time to reflect on the things that made the year magical. For me, it’s been trips of a lifetime, forming lifestyle habits that will help me grow as an individual and a handful of products to take my confidence to the next level!

I discovered a lot of favorites in 2018, but this month’s Birchbox gave me one last chance to discover some more products that I want to take into the new year: a hair cream that wears a lot of hats, a hydrating eye cream to brighten up those under eyes and a lip gloss to sparkle and shine.

Here’s what I received in my December Birchbox:

Oribe | Supershine Moisturizing Cream

Supershine, superstar.

This glamorous moisturizing cream acts as a leave-in conditioner as well as a styler, leaving your hair visibly soft, shiny and manageable to the touch. It has a lightweight scent that reminds me  of grape-seed oil that I quickly became obsessed with and I love knowing that this will protect my hair from heat tools.

I used this on both damp and dry hair and loved how different application methods fielded different results: applying it onto damp hair made my hair softer over the long haul, but applying it onto dry hair added a boost of shine and tamed those stubborn baby hairs. Either way, I can chalk this product becoming another favorite!

It’s no secret that Oribe has become one of my favorite haircare brands, but I really dislike how much it costs. This might be some incentive to use that $10 coupon Birchbox sent over…

Chella | Eyebrow Pencil in Tantalizing Taupe

Eyebrows on fleek. (Do kids still say that?)

Small but mighty, this creamy pencil helps create those perfect natural-looking brows. It comes in six shades, so each of the basic hair color groups are accounted for.

I had received another Chella brow product in my GenBeauty swag bag that I ended up swapping as my everyday brow product. I didn’t think I was going to like how thin this pencil felt in my hand, but I was actually blown away with how easy it was to use! Using small, hair-like strokes, I noticed that this didn’t deposit a lot of color onto the brow, but rather, just filling in those sparse spots I pull at. (I pull at my brows whenever I’m anxious/nervous or waaaaay overdue for an appointment.)

Side note: I also love how it’s a mechanical pencil and all you have to do is wind up the component. No sharpener needed here!

I’ve been doing my brows the same way for a long time, but it’s always fun to test out new products/ways of applying. I’m not sure if this will become a staple in my routine, but for the time being, I really enjoy it.

Air Repair | Super Hydrating Eye Cream

I’ve been getting into the habit of using up samples that have been gathering in my bathroom, including eye creams. I don’t often use eye creams, since I’m someone who tries to achieve 7 hours of sleep nightly, but they often say the best step is the preventative step.

This eye cream reduces puffiness, hydrates skin and smooths out fine lines, all while soothing your under-eyes. It’s also filled with anti-oxidant properties of Vitamin C to brighten, green tea extract to soothe and cloudberry seed oil, because that’s a thing.

Since I’m not too familiar on what to expect from an eye cream, it was hard to make a fair assessment on how I should  feel about the results, or lack thereof. I noticed that there was an immediate firming sensation upon application, but it was hard to say if it made a world of difference on my under-eye area.

Love of Color | Luminous Lip Shine in Beam

Beam me up, Scotty.

The shine of this Birchbox-exclusive lipgloss gives off the illusion of fuller and plumper lips without the uncomfortable stinging that’s associated with lip plumpers. Beam is a gorgeous rose gold shade that wears very naturally and there isn’t a terrible amount of shimmer. Wear it alone, or pair it with your favorite nude shade for a more dimensional look.

As we all know by now, I am not a lipgloss fan. As glosses go, this is a pretty tacky formula, but admittedly, it does wear nicely throughout the day. Finding glosses is a challenge in itself, so I’ll stick with my favorites. Instead, I gifted this shade to my mother for a post-Christmas pout.

Beachwaver Co. | Great Barrier Heat Protectant Hairspray

A hairspray that protects against heat? Sign me up!

I’m not someone who normally opts to ensure a great hair day by loading up on hairspray, but sometimes I need a little help. Not only does this protect against heat and environmental stressors, it helps strengthen strands while giving flexible hold.

This stuff smells incredible and doesn’t leave my hair feeling stiff or gross. It smells like a beach getaway, sans sea salt.

The component of this sample has a very slow, fine mist, which makes me feel as if the product isn’t being dispersed correctly. I like how there’s the locking twist top, so it won’t leak in my purse/gym bag, but it doesn’t give me peace of mind that I’m not wasting product.
